Facilitation is more than running a good meeting—it’s a holistic process that spans the entire arc of a group’s work. From intentional planning and clear communication between meetings to effective facilitation during sessions and thoughtful follow-up to ensure accountability, this workshop emphasizes facilitation as a transformative journey that allows people to think well together.
This interactive workshop is designed to strengthen your ability to facilitate the creation of spaces and conversations that inspire groups to equitably achieve meaningful goals. Over two sessions, you’ll explore seven essential facilitation practices, practical tools, and actionable strategies to integrate into your current facilitation approach.
In this workshop we will discuss how to:
- Design a facilitation arc to achieve your goals
- Understand and influence power dynamics for equitable outcomes
- Learn and apply decision-making tools that leverage alignment and drive progress
- Infuse play, connection, and levity into challenging, complex work
You will learn how to create spaces where individuals can come together, understand one another, and work collectively toward ambitious goals. In a time when fostering connection and cooperation is more crucial than ever, this workshop offers a practical framework for building your skills to co-create a collaborative path forward.

Through this 2-part workshop, you will:
- Understand the phases of facilitation and your role in supporting groups to effectively work together
- Learn seven essential facilitation practices to co-create spaces and conversations where group members are accountable for shared outcomes
- Analyze the composition of your group to understand how roles and relationships might influence behaviour
- Learn techniques for getting to agreement with a group, and infusing play, connection, and levity into challenging, complex work
- Have honest conversations about facilitation challenges, where things can go wrong, and what we can do instead
- Practice your facilitation skills with small groups for peer and coach feedback
meet the workshop facilitators
Lisa Attygalle
In her role at Tamarack, Lisa works with cities, organizations, collaboratives, and funders to build meaningful community-engaged processes. Over the last ten years, her work has focused on creating authentic engagement strategies and training staff teams, teaching and writing about innovative engagement methodologies, and facilitating collaborative processes to make decisions and work together to solve our most pressing issues. She cares deeply about shifting power, extending trust, and bringing creativity to community change work. Lisa advocates for simplicity in structures, frameworks, and design and loves integrating arts-based practices in community initiatives.
Heather Keam
Heather is a passionate advocate for community-driven development, serving as the Director for Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) at the Tamarack Institute. She is a Stewart of the ABCD Institute and has worked with John McKnight to build ABCD in Canada. With over 22 years of experience in community development, Heather has dedicated her career to empowering individuals and communities to thrive.
In her role at the Tamarack Institute, Heather collaborates with all levels of governments especially municipalities and organizations to craft strategies that centers community and foster a sense of belonging. She specializes in implementing ABCD principles to place community at the heart of community plans and initiatives. Heather's expertise extends to coaching and training staff teams, facilitating discussions, and authoring publications on ABCD, engagement, social capital, and belonging.
Yas Hassen
Yas is an Associate Director at Tamarack Institute’s Learning Centre, where they are privileged to focus on community development and (re)building relationships rooted in belonging. With an MA in Adult Education and Community Development, Yas integrates storytelling, sustainability, and capacity-building strategies to foster collective impact and meaningful systems change. They specialize in designing inclusive community engagement strategies that amplify diverse voices, ensuring equitable participation in decision-making processes.
Yas skillfully navigates interpersonal and organizational challenges with empathy, strategic problem-solving, and a deep commitment to anti-oppression. Transformative learning experiences, rooted in adult education principles, is a foundational approach for supporting the capacity of individuals and communities to create meaningful change. This approach also draws on the cycles and wisdom of the land and natural world, Yas’s approach emphasizes weaving shared stories and learnings to cultivate healthier, more connected communities. Passionate about anti-oppression efforts within social change, they facilitate and coach on tools to build a sense of belonging and envision transformative systems change through expanded collective imagination.

Registration includes pre-workshop learning and access to the workshop itself. It also enrolls you as a member the Tamarack's Global Learning Community.
Post-workshop, participants will be invited to register for a post-event coaching session. At this interactive session, learners will reconnect, get further advice and learn about additional resources to put their learning into action.
