Community Emergency Preparedness workshop: Preparing Our Home: An intergenerational approach to emergency preparedness

Join us for a Preparing Our Home sharing circle where First Nations youth, Mentors and Elders from across Turtle Island will share stories and advice for intergenerational emergency management. You will learn about community engagement, youth-led programming, and how communities are preparing for the 2024 wildfire season.

In particular, you will learn about the following topics:

Connecting food security and emergency preparedness: How can we build capacity for food security and emergency preparedness in our communities, with our neighbours, and our regions?
Child, youth and family-friendly spaces in evacuations: Given the colonial impacts on Indigenous parenting, how can we create safe spaces during evacuations for children, youth and families?
A focus on psychosocial recovery following disasters: how can we design disaster recovery programs that focus on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual recovery?

A strong focus will be placed on the importance of mentorship and peer-to-peer learning. The participants will have an opportunity to deepen their learning through breakout sessions with Indigenous facilitators.

Lead the development or implementation of community-led, culturally safe community emergency preparedness initiatives
Want to learn more how to connect food security and emergency preparedness
Want to lead their own community-led emergency preparedness efforts that center lived and living experiences of those most vulnerable in their communities
Want to learn more about Indigenous and intergenerational knowledge-led ways to engage community in emergency preparedness
Grow their capacity to support youth, children and families in evacuations
Design disaster recovery programs
Work in services in support of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual recovery during and after community emergencies

Darlene Yellow Old Woman-Munro

Darlene Yellow Old Woman-Munro is a Siksika Elder born and raised on the Siksika Nation; she is the oldest of 10 children. Darlene has served her community through many roles as a community nurse, Treaty 7 Zone Director, Medical Services Branch and Chief. In 2013, Darlene came out of semi-retirement to assist Siksika Nation with the flood disaster as a night shift volunteer and became Manager of Dancing Deer Disaster Recovery Program and Project Manager for Community Wellness (Psychosocial) Recovery Program. Darlene is Elder-in-Residence with Preparing Our Home.

Darlene is also one of three of Canadian recipients of the Global Affairs 2022 Women, Peace and Security Civil Society Leadership Award: Gender, Climate Change and Conflict.

Jeremiah Louis

Wai’. I am a member of the Okanagan Indian Band, of the Okanagan Valley in BC.

I have been involved in Emergency response since 1999. My firefighting experience is diverse as a structural firefighter in my community on reserve, within a municipality, and industrial workplaces. I have spent time as a structural firefighter, wildland firefighter, and a fire administrator. In 2016, I began to move into Emergency Management during severe flood and wildfire events that affected my community. I have experience from the frontlines to the coordination of responding to emergencies, and working with multijurisdictional incidents. I am now the Fire Chief and Emergency Services Manager for Takla Nation, a member of the Emergency Program Act modernization working group within British Columbia, and continually work with the province to ensure emergency response is always being improved to best serve First Nations. Jeremiah is a Mentor with Preparing Our Home

Kendra Bellegarde Okanee

"Tansi! Kendra Bellegarde Okanee nitisiyihkason. Niya nehiyaw, Omamihkwew ekwa Nahkawiskwew. Kaskitew maskoo maskwa ohci niya." Kendra is Cree, Assiniboine, and Saulteaux from Little Black Bear First Nation (Saskatchewan). She is a Childcare Worker at Qu'Appelle Haven Safe Shelter and a Ribbon Skirt Making Facilitator. She is a 2023 Preparing Our Home program graduate.

Lily Yumagulova

Lily Yumagulova is a Bashkir woman. She is a program director for the Preparing Our Home, an award-winning program that empowers Indigenous Youth to become emergency preparedness leaders in their communities: https://preparingourhome.ca/
