About the workshop

The collaborative work we carry out alongside and with communities to enact and support systems change is built upon open, authentic and strategically engaged relationships.

These relationships leverage trust as the central driver of collective voice, cooperative operational efforts, and the establishment of impactful common agendas. Whether we work virtually or in person, trust is a key competency in any collaborative effort toward sustainable social change. With trust as a foundation, we can plan, design, and act together and ultimately transition to aligned advocacy and cohesive structural change. However, when trust is eroded, we often create ‘turf’ - safe spaces around our work that we know well and that we can control. Understanding how and why we navigate between the two, between turf and trust, is one of the most powerful tools we can deploy in our collaborative work together on behalf of communities and community organizations.

This workshop focuses on that core leadership competency of trust-building. Collaborative success requires the engagement and commitment of partners to the common cause. A lack of trust can take collaborative efforts off track, but little attention is paid to actions that build trust, create connections and deal with mistrust. Participants in the workshop will walk away with ideas, tools and approaches to effectively engage diverse community partners and intentionally build trusting relationships and collaborative impact. Come prepared to share your experiences and insights on how to build trust.
